Your Caravan Checklist
Van Checklist: Tires: Are they showing signs of aging or perishing? Is there sufficient tread remaining? Is the tire pressure correct? Use the cold tire pressure rating on the compliance plate as a reference. Test the pressure when the tires are cold. After driving for at least 30 minutes, recheck the pressure. If the pressure has increased by 5 to 6 PSI, it's optimal. Higher pressure changes indicate underinflation, while lower changes suggest overinflation. Significant increases (10 PSI or more) may indicate a serious issue. Brakes: Have you inspected the brake shoes for wear? Are they adjusted correctly? Is the brake controller functioning properly? Do you understand the safe towing settings for the controller? Wheels: Are the nuts tightened properly? Is there any damage to the rims? Bearings: Have the bearings been properly greased? Are they adjusted correctly? Breakaway Safety: Are the safety chains compliant? Does your van have a breakaway system? Is the cable and clip securely attached and operational? 12 Volt Electrical: Is the plug connection to the car in good condition? Do all lights function correctly (tail, brake, and indicators)? Are the van batteries charged, and are they charging while driving? 240 Volt Electrical: Is the RCD (Residual Current Device) functioning correctly? Test the cut-out switch. If any doubts, consult a licensed electrician. Gas: Have the gas bottles been filled? Are they securely fastened? Have you inspected the flexible hoses? If concerned, consult a licensed gas technician. Water: Are the water tanks clean and leak-free? Is the water pump operating properly? If using filters, are they functioning correctly, and do they need replacing? Load: Do you know the full weight of your van? What is the tow ball down load? Do you understand ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass), GTM (Gross Trailer Mass), and their significance? Consider consulting a company like Vanweigh for assistance if unsure. Rear View Mirrors: Are the mirrors on your tow car compliant? Extras Attached to the Van: Awning: Is it functioning correctly? Is it securely attached for travel? Spare tire carrier: Is it properly secured? Jerry Can holders, etc.: Check all external fittings to ensure they are securely fastened for transport. Don't forget to inspect the inside of the van for any additional concerns.
